Student Finance and Loans

The tuition fee for the academic year is £9,250 for UK and EU students.

If you’re successful in your application to train to teach primary school children, you could be eligible for a tax-free bursary to support you during your course.

If you’re eligible for a bursary, the payments will be processed automatically by the University of Cumbria who will lead your training. These payments will be made in equal monthly instalments for the duration of your course. The University will confirm exact details and make the final decision on trainees’ eligibility for financial support - so it’s worth asking what might be available to you before you apply.

Applicants with a degree from outside the UK should refer to this equivalency table to see if their degree is likely to attract a bursary. You can also check with any schools or universities you are considering applying to.

If you are not eligible for a bursary, you can still access standard student loans and/or grants to help fund your training.

Student loans

If you are a UK or EU student, you are entitled to a tuition fee loan which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 (if you're from England) or £15,795 (if you're from Scotland).  UK students may also be eligible for a maintenance loan (up to £5,500) and a maintenance grant (up to £3,354). For more information about student loans and how to apply, visit the University of Cumbria website undergraduate student finance page.

You don’t need to apply for a bursary – if you are enrolled on a non-salaried postgraduate course and meet the eligibility criteria, you will begin receiving payments automatically by your chosen teacher training provider. You will receive more information on the arrangements and how this is distributed prior to the start of your course.

If you are awarded a bursary and study full-time:
